Constitution Week: Honoring the Foundation of Our Nation

Each year, Constitution Week is observed from September 17–23 to commemorate the signing of the United States Constitution in 1787. This vital week provides an opportunity for Americans to reflect on the principles of liberty, self-government, and rule of law that form the cornerstone of our nation.

The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), including the California SAR, proudly support this annual observance. As descendants of the patriots who secured American independence, SAR members are committed to honoring the legacy of the Constitution and encouraging all citizens to study and uphold the freedoms it guarantees.

The Origins of Constitution Week

In 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a congressional resolution officially establishing Constitution Week. The annual observance begins on September 17, the anniversary of the Constitution’s signing in Philadelphia, and extends for a full week.

Since that time, schools, civic organizations, and historical groups have used the occasion to highlight the importance of constitutional principles in daily life. Public buildings and institutions often participate with educational programs, displays, and outreach efforts.

Why Constitution Week Matters

The Constitution is the oldest written national constitution still in use. It not only established the framework for the American system of government but also inspired movements for democracy around the globe. By observing Constitution Week, Americans are reminded of several key ideas:

  • The Rule of Law – No person or institution is above the Constitution.
  • Checks and Balances – Power is divided among the three branches of government to safeguard liberty.
  • Individual Rights – The Bill of Rights and later amendments protect fundamental freedoms.
  • Civic Responsibility – Citizens share the duty of preserving constitutional government through participation and vigilance.

California SAR and the Spirit of the Constitution

As part of its mission, the California SAR works to promote understanding of the nation’s founding ideals. Constitution Week provides an ideal occasion for outreach, education, and community engagement. Local SAR chapters across California often partner with schools, libraries, and civic organizations to raise awareness about the Constitution and its continuing relevance.

By strengthening public knowledge of America’s founding document, the California SAR helps ensure that future generations appreciate the sacrifices made by Revolutionary patriots and the enduring framework of freedom they helped establish.

How You Can Participate

Even without official events, individuals can join in the observance of Constitution Week in meaningful ways:

  • Read the Constitution – Take time to revisit the original text and its amendments.
  • Display the Flag – Fly the American flag at home or work during Constitution Week.
  • Engage with History – Visit a museum, library, or online archive to learn more about the Founding Era.
  • Teach the Next Generation – Share the importance of constitutional principles with children and students.
  • Download a Constitution Day Poster – At the bottom of this post you can download a poster to print or share online.

A Living Legacy

Constitution Week is more than just a historical commemoration—it is a reminder that the American experiment in liberty requires continual commitment. The California SAR encourages all Californians to take this opportunity to celebrate, learn, and reaffirm their dedication to the Constitution that has guided our Republic for over two centuries.
